In this seasonal follow-up to Sammy Spider's First Hanukkah, the eager arachnid's mother teaches him to make a web when theirs is laid waste by a "monster"?a broom being used to ready the Shapiros' home for Passover. Though Sammy becomes fascinated by his mother's explanations of the holiday traditions, he is repeatedly told, "Spiders don't celebrate Passover. Spiders spin webs." Following instructions, Sammy completes a new web?and participates in the Shapiro family observance after all. Using cut-paper artwork made festive with cheery patterns, Kahn depicts a contemporary human family (complete with kitty), and a mother-son spider duo reminiscent of Eric Carle's creations. Though Rouss's text is lively and informative, her attempts to blend Passover basics with a rudimentary lesson on shapes (the first page terms this "a book of shapes") become somewhat jumbled and ultimately water down both aspects of the story. The Sammy The Spider Passover Book is one every Jewish child should have in there personal library. The colors are vibrant and the story is fun. This is a great series. My children enjoyed me reading the story over and over again.
Great book for trying to introduce a small child to Passover.The illustrations are beautiful and very appropriate for a 4-5 year old child.A great introduction to all the holidays as the author writes books for all the holidays .Will definitely purchase more of his books as they are explained in easy understandable languagr
Good Book to Explain Passover activities.I wanted this book in my library because it explains Passover well to students in grades K-4 and prompts good discussions from students who celebrate this holiday.
My daughter is 4 (excuse me... she's ALMOST 5! LOL) and she loves all the Sammy Spider books we have read so far. She is also starting to read and so she has been reading this one to me! I love that it explains Passover to her in terms she gets! We look forward to adding more books about "Silly little Sammy"
