It's a great book with much detailed information. It helps me understand why and how analyze the fatigue. I would recommend this to all friends who are in this field.

Very well written book. It contains much of the information necessary to understand the fatigue theory. Methods used in fatigue analysis are given in detail. Additionally to the time domain fatigue analysis methods, the frequency domain fatigue analysis methods are also covered.

Outstanding book on subject. It includes theoretical analytical methods and test methods Strongly recommend it. However, it does not include fractology section.

This book does an excellent job covering many topics in fatigue of metals from simple uniaxial constant load to complex damage accumulation theories.Two specific topics motivated me to buy the book. First, this is one of the few books to do a decent job of summarizing how to use statistical methods to generate an appropriate typical and design curve from a set of SN data. Whether you want to characterize the whole range of fatigue life or just the endurance limit, several test design and the statistical analysis of those test results are well covered. MMPDS, Chapter 9 and Analysis and Representation of Fatigue Data are more extensive on this topic but also overkill for many engineers.Second, this book has the best explanation I've ever read of the double linear damage rule. Only Gary Halford, himself, ever explained it better to me. Both of these subjects included theory and practical examples to ensure adequate understanding of the material.But I can't give it five stars because of organizational problems. Each chapter is written by a different author. Everything you need to know for a chapter is not necessarily covered within that chapter or the ones before it. This wouldn't be so bad except that the index is awful. Major important topics are not even listed in the index (e.g., double linear damage rule). Page numbers are incorrect; I just spent 5 minutes looking for a good example but EVERY entry I picked from the index was incorrect.This was not a problem when I read the book cover-to-cover after I bought it. But I work for a living and when trying to use this book as a reference I always have to go looking for the info I need and that wastes time.

It is a well written book on fatigue-theory, methods, and testing process. It also contains numerical examples to demonstrate the theory in time history loading as well as spectral. I was working on fatigue due to random vibration. This book contains theory, recent advances, and few step by step numerical examples; that helped me to easily implement random vibration fatigue or fatigue due to PSD and ASD.

This little biography was a pleasure to read but the author left out a couple of things I'd have been interested in hearing about. For instance, the Kindle bribe for writing "Ur" and the straight to screenplay "Sleepwalkers" about which Stephen King said (I'm paraphrasing) " There are such things as "Sleepwalkers". They're the criminals who move around invisibly, hurting children." I'm the same age as King and have been reading his books since "Carrie". His legacy of beautifully crafted work and his literary "voice" will never be matched. Kinda like David Ortiz :0)

Okay, so Stephen knew of this book, didn't want to have anything to do with it, but he also told his family and friends that they were welcome to talk to the "unofficial" biographer, Lisa Rogak. He was also worried enough about it that he was lurking about listening in on the conversation between his lawyer and Rogak to find out what her intentions were. So in this book you will find mostly second-hand tales and common knowledge about King. Do with that what you will. Personally, I found parts of it fascinating, but most of it lacking in anything new or concrete, and I just hate half-truths and gossip. So, if you are the kind of person who is willing to read a book and take it with a very large grain of salt, then have at it.

Practical and sensibly covered, Stephan King's life uinfolds from when he was a small boy in Maine. Lisa Rogak did a good jb reasearchinghim toughing out a not-so-easy youth to his endless stream of writing at long last being recognized. Very interesting indeed.

This is a wonderful telling of the life of Stephen King. It reads well, is highly informative, and very entertaining. The author has bypassed the obvious problem of simply repeating what is already out there with ease. This is King's story in Rogak's words. Recommended.

It's an interesting biography.. however it's a shame that it's only secondary material, and not primary source text and informations.Still good to read. Oh and i believe that a french version will soon be released...

A large number of claims have been made for improvements in reading and writing in a society. These range from cognitive skills development such as logical and analytical thinking, to societal advancements like democracy and equality, all the way to social progress manifested in political stability and falling birth rates. According to James Gee, there is little evidence that literacy, in the sense of a cognitive skill that enables us to decode and encode text, has had any such effects. In particular, literacy in this sense has done nothing to reduce social inequality. This is because texts are social products that can only be read and understood as part of an involvement in the larger Discourse that surrounds them. They are, in Gee's words, "the social and historical inventions of various groups of people" (p. 45).So what does this mean? A Discourse (that is, a 'big D Discourse') is a way of "behaving, interacting, valuing, thinking, believing, speaking, and often reading and writing" (p. 3) that allow us to 'perform' our various identities appropriately in contexts. We may be, at different times during the same day, parent, teacher, supervisor, trainee, friend, and stranger, for example. In each of these identities, there are expected ways of behaving, of which reading and writing (what is often referred to as literacy) are just an aspect.Our primary Discourse, the one we learn early in life, is the one in which we are a non-specialized "everyday person" (p. 153). In order to get on in the various contexts of the social world we inhabit, we need to learn secondary Discourses, such as those of the school, church, playground, and workplace. Not only do we have to learn them, we have to acquire them, in the Krashen sense, that is, by being immersed in them and apprenticed in them by more experienced others. They need to become second nature to us so that we can perform the correct behaviors in appropriate contexts. The reason why simply learning to read and write does not help to bring social equality is that some groups in society have greater access to secondary Discourse environments and to the apprenticeship required to be able to navigate them. As Gee describes it, while many middle-class white parents familiarize their children with standard English and with literacy practices that emulate the practices of the school, in many families of other social groups such acculturation does not happen. Gee is keen to point out that this does not make the practices of non-white-middle-class families inferior; rather, they are just not consistent with the practices of a group that has become powerful in society. Hence, "standard English," is accepted in school; African-American Vernacular English is not welcome. Children who come to school without having already been immersed in the practices and language of the school, what Gee calls "essay-text literacy" (p. 69), will have a hard time catching up, no matter how proficient they become in decoding and encoding. Literacy then, far more than the ability to read and write, is "mastery of a secondary Discourse" (p. 173).For those not already familiar with Gee's work, this is a book that has the ability to make the scales fall from the eyes. Gee writes from a profoundly ethical place, and builds his case skillfully using straightforward language. His definition and description of literacy as mastery of a secondary Discourse applies not only to elementary and secondary education, but to those in higher education, particularly those preparing international students to function in an unfamiliar educational setting. It provides insight into what makes language and behavior appropriate or inappropriate - that is, incongruent with 'normal expectations.' Although it's an academic text, it's very readable and a great read. Highly recommended, then, for those involved in education, especially language education, and for anyone wanting a deeper understanding of language in our daily lives.

I ordered this cookbook basically because I watch "Ceder Cove" all the time, wouldn't miss an episode. I ran across this cookbook while on vacation and the price was too high, so when I returned home I immediately went to Amazon and bought it at a great low price with free shipping. It came very fast. I have made some of the recipes and they are great. Plus you can catch up with all the people from "Cedar Cove" and find out where the recipes came from. So thank you to Debbie Macombers books, cookbook and the Hallmark series and of course for Amazon! I highly recommend this to all fun loving cooks everywhere.

My first words of advise is to finish all the Cedar Cove books before you read any of the stories in this cookbook. If not, surprises will be spoiled. This is one of the best cookbooks I have ever gotten. It came in the mail yesterday and I immediately sat down to look through it. I wanted to try almost every recipe right away, I did infact make the chilli pie recipe last night and my family loved it. Lots of good down home cooking without the fancy ingredients that none of us have or even know what they are. Beautiful pictures of the recipes and very easy to read.This would make a great gift for any new bride or a great housewarming gift. Can't wait to make the Banana Bread recipe today.....

This cookbook, first of all, is a hardcover book with beautiful pictures and, best of all, stories about the Cedar Cove books and characters. Each recipe has a little story about the character the recipe comes from. Very clever idea to attach the recipes to your favorite characters, especially now that Cedar Cove is a television show on the Hallmark Channel. The recipes are down-to-earth and easy to make. The recipes are very easy to follow. I've already picked several to make for the Christmas and New Years.

It seems that most of the cookbooks I come across typically have two or three keepers in them. This one however provided me with a ton of new recipes that continue to get requests from my husband to make again and again. Almost every single recipe in here is excellent. I love this cookbook.

Honestly, I was very disappointed in this cookbook - thought I would find some great recipes in here, especially "comfort food," but I haven't made one recipe. Nothing appeals to me.

this book is fine but I did not realized until after I purchased and received the book that this is an older version vs a newer version.

This was a gift for my grandmother. She doesn’t cook much anymore but she loves Debbie Macomber so she was very excited when she received it 😊

The beautiful illustrations, layout of the book and stories about each puppet character make this more than just a craft/ how to book but a 'story' book and piece of art in its own right. The whit, humor, and creativity Marty uses in his writing and the character he creates makes it enjoyable to look through for both adults and children. This a perfect activity for children's parties and to be honest I wanted to give it a try so I had a couple of friends over, had a couple glasses of white wine and created some amazingly awesome puppets. I have to say that I was able to follow along and create a sock puppet as were my friends and if we can do it a 6 year old will have no problem. I love this book!!! Get it!!!

Most of the wagons included in this book are drawings from The Hub, a coachbuilders' magazine from the mid 1800s through the early 1900s.As a scale HD vehicle modeler, I would highly recommend this book as a reference source. It does have a few engineering drawings that could be used to build from (a nice set of plans for the Hansom Cab are included); most prints give the diameter of the wheels, which can then be used to scale the drawings. There are quite a few pictures as well of very interesting commercial and trade vehicles. Since these drawings came from The Hub, the designers recommendations for painting and trimming the vehicle is listed with almost all the wagons.Very interesting from a historical perspective as well.

A real eye opener into the past. Fully illustrated with large black and white photos and line drawings with plenty of information on each wagon. You will really understand the importance of "horse power" in the old days.. Buy this book, you will not be disappointed.

Before reading Mrs. Furlong's account of growing up Amish, I had admired the sect for it's plain and simple teachings. However, once I encountered Mrs. Furlong's upbringing in a dysfunctional family where accounts of incest between her brother and sisters took place, my view of what I had considered to be innocent Christian beliefs were expectantly shattered. I will never look at the sect the same again. They have the same issues as everyone but they keep the violence quiet because they are allowed to handle crimes within the sect so the "English' law does not prosecute them by 'our ways'. I hope that things have changed since Mrs. Furlong has written her memoir as I want to believe that this sect is perfect, without hurt and without crime. However, I expect that everyone is the same no matter how much they want you to believe otherwise. The plain clothes and demeanor are just tools to fools the 'English' into thinking that they have found a better way of living their lives.

I don't regret reading this book, but it is a somewhat odd memoir. The focus of the story is the childhood of the author in a toxic and violent Amish family. She positions her memories around a "real time" trip to her father's funeral, a device that doesn't work all that well. At times during the story, I felt that the situations described were not that uniquely Amish, but rather drearily familiar to anyone who grew up in a large (or even small) family where the adults were not up to the task of parenting. Before I read this book, I had just finished reading "Leaving the Saints" by Martha Beck, which is about a woman who grew up in a large, dysfuntional Mormom family with similar forces of religious fanaticism, patriarchy, and neglect/abuse/violence, also culminating in the author's rejection of her childhood community and religion. Although I cringed at times at the less than polished writing in "Why I Left the Amish", Beck's book was so slickly written that at times I wondered if she was embellishing -- a concern that I did not have at all with this book. I found Saloma's accounts quite convincing. However, the book that really opened my eyes to some of the complexities of Amish life was "Rumspringa" by Tom Shachtman (2006), which I recommend. It cured me of my romantic notions (shared by most Americans, I think) about the Amish and their pastoral lives. Their culture has some positive aspects (I admire their pacifism and rejection of materialism), but unfortunately it seems built on depriving people of education, inducing fear of the world, extreme patriarchy where women and girls have little status, and religious fundamentalism. It seems like Saloma is too easy on the Amish culture, and works hard to sound balanced. She also fails to share why she returned to the Amish once after leaving. In short, although this book is flawed, we are still lucky to have it, as it is a thoughtful, firsthand account of Amish life. I agree with the person who said there will be more of these memoirs in the future. As the Amish population grows, more of them have to work in the "English" world, which brings them into contact with the rest of us. Even from Saloma's story you can see that it was her contacts with English women via her house-cleaning work that helped her figure out how to leave her family. The large families that the Amish continue to have may prove detrimental in the long run to their culture and their ability to retain their members.

I think it is appropriate that "Why I Left the Amish" has a picture of the author as a little girl on the cover because her voice throughout the book is that of a little girl, even when she describes her life long after she has left the community. She does write beautifully but there is a simple, almost simplistic tone, and that would be my only criticism of the book. The circumstances are intriguing. She certainly gives us much more of an insight into Amish life than we usually get. I hope that her particular situation is not common because her family was massively dysfunctional. Her father was mentally ill and physically and emotionally abusive. Her mother, intelligent, angry and frustrated that she was expected to be completely submissive to this incompetent man, attached herself to the oldest son and emotionally neglected the girls. Unfortunately that son was even more abusive than the father and he sexually assaulted the girls - but the mother looked the other way. It is disappointing that the Amish community could not find a way to help this struggling family but left them to their own and expected complete submission to the father. (And, BTW, the civil authorities were no help either - when the abuse was reported they would not investigate unless someone over 21 consented.)Saloma goes into great detail about her struggle with the Amish point of view - particularly submission. As her situation at home deteriorates, she realizes she has to go. That section of the book where she bravely makes her escape is very exciting. Fortunately, she finds her way out in the "world", marries well, has a family and as they grow up she is finally able to realize her dream of going to college. She is very brave to share all the ugly details of her struggle with us. Leaving such a closed community (whom she still loves) takes great courage. The Amish "shun" those who leave but she did have some contact with her family and that part is touching. I suspect that if they ever read this book they won't like it! I highly recommend it.

Well written book by a woman with a compelling story to tell. The story alternates between past and present in an easily readable way. There are multiple instances of abuse that are shocking but for the most part not graphic. The abuse does not drive the narrative as much as the overall family dynamic and the insight into how the lack of oversight in a branch of a closed society can leave the most vulnerable exposed. The book is written with grace and the absence of malice that is heartening. I was left wanting more as the book does not cover much after her departure.
