This book grew out of a manuscript left by Andrew Garcia on his death in 1942. Ben Stein acquired the manuscript and edited it to tell Garcia's story of the 1877 war between the U.S. government and the Nez Perce people, the end of the buffalo herds and other historic events in Western life.

Andrew Garcia's first hand account of his experiences in the Montana area as a trapper and trader living among the tribes native to that area are both harrowing and remarkable for the level of detail that he recorded in his memoir. Referring to himself as the squaw kid he becomes comfortable trading and even becoming romantically involved with a survivor of the Nez Perce debacle who is living among the other tribes as a refuge. This is a fascinating book on many levels. First Garcia is a white man living with the Indians and his perspective is unique in that much of his trouble results from encounters with other whites or Indians who are drunk on the whiskey that is used to trade for anything the Indians had of value. There is a sense of the inevitable change that is fast approaching these people as these two cultures increasingly clash over land. At one point he diverges to allow his Nez Perce woman tell the story of her people's struggle in her own voice as told to Garcia. These chapters are a bit difficult not because the content is inaccurate but because the style of writing changes dramatically before Garcia reverts back to his own tale in his own voice.Overall this is an indispensable read for anyone interested in the history of the West. It was recommended to me by a friend and I immediately ordered and read it. Truly unmissable to anyone with an interest in that topic.

Author Andrew Garcia’s reminisces of his life in 1878-79 Montana is magnetic...never a dull moment. His original intent at a relatively young age was to seek out adventure as a hunter and fur trapper/trader in Montana...and migrating up from the Rio Grande he did just that. After teaming up with questionable characters such as Beaver Tom, Big-Nose George and others, he eventually establishes his own Indian buffalo camp...trading this and that for hides. The action is non-stop. In due time Garcia marries a Nez Perce woman who just so happened to be in Chief Joseph’s group during their quest to Canada the year previous. At any rate, Garcia’s interactions with the Indians, renegades, desperados, horse-thieves, murderers, thugs and ruffians is very compelling...he called it “the melting pot of hell.”His main concerns were that his story would be envisioned as fiction...and it comes close that...almost like the old dime novels. Be that as it may, well worth the read.

In the mid 90's, I spent time in Montana with an old retired game warden (wife's great uncle) who was a true "mountain man" of the Northwest. It's weird that Andrew Garcia and my wife's great uncle were so much alike! They had the same sayings and expressions! NTL, this is a great read that I could not put down. It made me miss Montana and its Big Sky Country!!! It probably helps if you have a connection to Montana and its history and have an appreciation in how the Great Plains Indians and Settlers lived and interacted. Great book! BTW, if anyone has a gripe with how they were treated, it is the Native Americans.

Back in the 1800s it was common for women to keep diaries or journals, but men however seldom had the time. This is a great true story composed of Andrew Garcia's journals. Of Spanish decent, Andrew Garcia wanted to try his hand at fur trapping. He was one of the last, as most of the beaver were trapped out by the time he decided to give it a go. Once in Montana, he really became more of a trader with the Indians. This is his story, filled with adventure, and even romance. This book was first given to me, and I passed it along to a friend, but later re-purchased it. Besides wanting to read it again, I wanted a copy for my personal library. If you love true stories, history, and adventure, you will love Andrew Garcia's book, Tough Trip through Paradise.

Andrew Garcia recounts toward the end of his autobiography being trapped, along with his lover, in a tangle of fallen trees that made movement impossible and left them liable to die. I took this with a grain of salt until, a few years ago, I met the same problem while deep in the forests of the Swan Valley. Whether Garcia was a model of honesty or half-fraud, I concluded he at least knew what he was talking about. All tales grow taller in the telling but this narrative of his life to the about the age to twenty-five evinces verisimilitude. The young Garcia he limns is a fool full of bravado. In literary language, this is a coming-of-age tale. A young man signs-on as a horse-wrangler with the Army, drifts into a bad crowd and barely avoids his comeuppance, takes an Indian lover and then loses her. One can tell that the Garcia in his salad days was the sort of scapegrace one finds today in urban gangs and that his getting of wisdom came slowly because of his foolish character. His experiences are intense but entirely within the bounds of belief. The reader can find this out for himself. The last twenty or thirty pages are, if true, equal to anything in "The Illiad." He and his lover, trapped in the timbers, are besieged by a grizzly-bear and the encounter is as ferocious and extraordinary as anything I have read in a now long life. I have not yet read anything more magnificent in all of American literature.I have been accused of being "stingy" assigning stars. Garcia's account of his early years of life deserves every star I awarded. It is an extraordinarily book.

Written by an uneducated trapper in the 1890s, but somehow he wrote a manuscript of his life (and travels in the 1860s). He had an indian wife so it was suppressed by his immediate family but later generations found the manuscript and published it after his death. Google the history of the book, then read the book. I read the book twice, the 2nd time about 3 years later, and it was so good it seemed like a new book. One of my alltime favorites.
