In The Spiritual Child, Dr. Miller opens up a pivotal discussion about our children's well-being and development through an entirely unconventional approach --the need to mainstream spiritual exploration and education. The urgency of her argument rests on its universality. This is about all of us, what makes us human--our spiritual understanding, expression and development, supported and nurtured by families, schools and communities to give us the capacity to live vibrant, full lives. The lessons in the book, drawn from extensive clinical research and a wide range of personal experiences, offer organic, heartfelt, authentic ways of communicating, listening and being attune to children and ultimately, with each other, in our families and communities. Dr. Miller's case for supporting and developing children's innate spiritual wisdom and longing is actually a lifeline for all parents, teachers, mentors. Her research thoroughly documents and underscores the importance of how a spiritual approach, practice and understanding, however personal, helps children develop an inner core that will support them as they navigate the inevitable vicissitudes of life and acts as a protection against risky behavior and depression.Dr. Miller's book is a long overdue conversation, about child development and the meaning of being human, that now is supported by overwhelming research. It brings us back to our roots.
As the parent of an 8 and almost 10-year-old, I found Lisa Miller's book to be most educational in helping me to understand the natural spiritual trajectory of children from toddlerhood into young adulthood. Her research findings, intuitive mother's heart, and professionalism as an educator and clinical practitioner, shine through compellingly. I consider 'The Spiritual Child' to be a landmark handbook for parents who strive to support the spiritual growth and ongoing development of their children - particularly (as she notes) in the fast-paced, over-scheduled, digital age we live in. This book is filled with wisdom, love, compassion, and scientific credibility. I highly recommend it . .
Bravo, Dr.Miller for addressing through your research just how important a spiritual element in a child's life can inform and enhance his/her overall well being and "success." There is no question that cultivating and/acknowledging this aspect within ourselves and our children leads to a more integrated child who does not simply place his/her value or worth on external successes but has the ability to tap into their inner spiritual sense of self to tackle obstacles that undoubtably get in the way. We are already comfortable with the benefits of integrated medicine as a way to enhance health, now it's time for a more integrated approach to parenting. Dr. Miller has shown through her scientific research at Columbia that parents who support the spiritual lives of their children raise healthier, happier, and emotionally resilient kids who eventually become healthier, happier and more balanced adults.
A very important book. I bought it because of my grandchildren, but it had a profound effect on me too. Miller opened up my eyes to many sources of transcendent spirituality that deserve to be recognized. I had been reluctant to value adequately them, as they were not necessarily "religion." But she points out that religion works when we have spirituality to bring to it. I felt enriched by her understanding and wisdom.
I loved this book. I have purchased many copies to give to friends and just ordered another last week to give to some new parents. I wish I had had this book from the moment my kids were born! The book is a great look through a scientific lens at the importance of nurturing spirituality in our children. I am convinced that spirituality does help children grow into healthy adults. This book is a helpful guide to keeping our kids on the right path through nurturing their spirituality (and helping ourselves as parents in the process).
Brilliant...recommended to me by Episcopal Bishop Edward Salmon who describes it as all the research proving that parents can secure the spiritual health of their children. He was right...this is a must read for all pastors, Sunday School directors, parents and God-parents.
This author seems to have a lot of real life experiences informing her work. I trust her and it makes sense. I will adjust my parenting in light of what I learned from her.
I love this book and the ideas it conveys. Thank you, Dr. Lisa Miller, for sharing this research and encouraging us to be more open to possibility and growth as individuals and as a culture. That fMRIs show the physical value of a spiritual practice is one more reason that being present and mindful is crucial for wellness. Your book helps us to help our children learn this early in life. Awesome!
