A few years old but still the best guide we found. It has excellent maps of the places you will visit., helping you plan your sightseeing.
We are staying in Melbourne for a week and its a good intro to the city. Lots of good ideas on how to spend your time. Easy to use and good ideas for all areas of the city and surrounding area. It may be too comprehensive for a short stay but it does give the must see sights and activities.
Very nice book. Full of tidbits of helpful information, and lots of photos.
This book is well written and comprehensive. It is clear, amply illustrated, and helpfully indexed. You need not purchase any other guide for a one or two week visit to Cape Town. It served my touring purposes well. I recommend it highly.
I ordered 3 different books for my trip to Cape Town and this was by far the best, and the one I constantly came back to.
This is a nice book, with a good bit of history and information. However, it's not very helpful if you're looking to explore neighborhoods or for practical information. It's very tourist-centric, and it's a bit outdated. Instead, do all of your research online. Unfortunately, I have yet to find a Cape Town guidebook that is equal to or anywhere near as good as my own research. This book just doesn't cut it, unfortunately, especially if you're a young traveler looking for cool places to explore. I will say, however, that this was the better of the other CPT guidebooks that I looked to purchase.
I bought this in a second hand store so it was a bit out of date (2005) but other than that it turned out to be helpful, practical and interesting. I used it in combination with an up-to-date Rough Guide and only wished I had read them both more thoroughly when I was there as on rereading them back home I see a missed a number of interesting sights.I recommend it highly with one important qualification. It does not give enough information on the confusing taxi system. Many of the cab drivers were conmen who overcharged, pretended not to understand and never had any change in my experience. Nor does it give a list of official reliable metered taxi firms you can call although the Rough Guide does.
I got this guide as a gift. My friends have the Lonely Planet one and I have seen other brands for Cape Town. The Insight guide is 10 million times better than most of the competition. More detailed and useful photographs, all in color, at least one on each page. Short text but crammed with information for those who would rather spend time on adventures than reading a guide book. It was very entertaining to read as well. If you're going to Cape Town, get this book and you will know what I mean. Their warning about Long Street is hilarious. Their description of the people who hang out at the Clifton Beaches is unbelievable coming from a guide book. There are little interesting stories/facts throughout the book such as the one about the first female doctor to perform a C-section. She was pretending to be a man in order to be a doctor and the truth was only discovered when she died. Again, this book is such a great deal for the price and beats almost all other guidebooks out there at under $10.
