This is the book you've been looking for, and I mean that with all the Jedi Knight skills I can muster. If, like me, you accept the reality of how we're impacting our environment, but feel overwhelmed by the implications of such information, this is the book for you. This isn't a heavy, depress-the-hell-out-of-you sort of book that overwhelms you with hordes of grim information about climate change, mass extinctions, and collapsing ocean ecosystems. There's plenty of other places to go for that information if you're strong enough to fully assess and grapple with how we're impacting the environment we depend on. Instead, this is one of the only books out there I know of that focuses on how to successfully face this reality, and become more whole, happy, and transcendent because of it. It's about breaking through the cycle of grief and denial that often paralyzes us, and turning it into a more honest, connected, vibrant way to live. As Pipher puts it, "If we wonder whether we can cope with the awareness, we are in good company. Everyone wrestles with that question. But a surprisingly large number of people manage to move beyond despair and anger into something stronger and more beautiful." This is a book that explores how to do that.I'm deeply grateful to Mary Pipher for writing this book. It simultaneously challenged and comforted me, and ultimately left me feeling more hopeful and empowered. I also believe it's an important book for our times, and one that would make an outstanding selection for book clubs, and church or college discussion groups. And it does this in an honest, personal way that creates connections and restores hope. As Pipher writes, "In a sense, there is no such thing as false hope. Hope creates new realities."Read it. Share it. Discuss it. You'll be glad that you did.
This book is a personal account of Mary Pipher of her struggle to mount a defense against allowing the Keystone Pipeline to run through her home state of Nebraska. It outlines her early attempts to contact politicians, farmers, ranchers, and others to understand the effect humans are having on the planet. She writes about the general effects of global climate change, and how difficult it is to get this across to people. She quotes many important writers including Jared Diamond, Barbara Kingsolver, James Hansen, Bill McKibben and others, and how we are now so polarized that we can’t communicate with one another. Towards the end, she tells about trying to organize Nebraskans against the TransCanada Keystone Pipeline. She is wonderful at bringing together people of diverse backgrounds and beliefs and getting them to organize and take action. It is a series of small successes and many setbacks, and by the end of the book in May 2012, they did not stop it. But they will continue to try many tactics, and it still may work. I liked the topic and approach, but there was a lot of repetition on her (and her friends) feelings during the ups and downs of their campaign.
Thanks to Mary Pipher and The Green Boat, I was able to make it through the first sixty days of 2017 with my head up and my goals intact. Her story and her ability to connect me as a reader helped me see that I can make a difference in my surroundings, my family, and my lifestyle. Piper's willingness to share the initial bumps of starting a grassroots resistance was an affirmation that we can persist.
When I arrived at the last page of Mary's Pipher's The Green Boat, I immediately turned back to the beginning and read it entirely again. And then I emailed two separate groups of people - for two completely different reasons - and encouraged them to read it also. They almost all did, and found it helpful. Here are the two reasons I gave.First, it tells an extraordinary story of how hope is lodged in community. When a network of like-minded people find each other, commit to mission together, and creatively set about their task together they not only do far more good than they ever could together. They find themselves more transformed than they ever dared imagine. I think her story can be my story, and your story as well.To a second group I talked about her passion for overcoming climate change. She is sharp, honest, prophetic at times, and does a great job of communicating the science in accessible ways. She doesn't preach. The story of a granddaughter who convinces her grandmother to learn more about climate change because SHE cares about it is a case in point. Grandma says, and she's right of me too, "It's the only way I'll learn."But there's a third huge reason to love this book. Pipher's writing style is of the highest excellence. If you are like me, and want to hone your writing skills, read Pipher's books - all of them. And perhaps you'll do like I did; read them all again.Marty TroyerAuthor, The Gospel Next Door.
