I purchased one of these books back in the early 2000's while rebuilding my 914. The price was less than $20 then. I found it to be a priceless tool when working on and sorting out issues on the 914. Anyone who says different is full of sh*t. This has information in it that only someone with years and years of experience with the car COULD know. Freaky little things that had to be compiled over many years. Good job Mr. Hussey!
I bought a 1974 914-4 2.0 last year, and a copy of this book came with it, along with an exhaustive collection of parts and other books the owner gave me. This has proven to be an excellent way to get up to speed on the quirks of this car, as all Porsche models have their own little oddities that often take years of ownership to work out. I like working on my Porsches and this has proven an invaluable step in getting comfortable taking things off the car, fixing them and putting them back on. It's not as much a detailed how-to manual in the style of other books such as the factory manuals, Haynes and Chiltons books, but rather a good debugging tool, kind of like having a seasoned mechanic looking over your shoulder and saying, "Yep, ever' time it does that, it means the turn-signal switch is about to go", or, "Don't worry about that too much, they tend to do that all the time." I would definite suggest adding it to your collection if you own one of these fun little cars!
I purchased this book right from George Hussey at Auto Atlanta and read it from cover to cover. Beware! (that word is used extensively throughout the book) The language is pedestrian at best and the tips are repeated over and over. I'd be surprised if the book actually has 700 tips, but don't discount its usefulness yet. The book is an excellent fire starter and lights up easily. So, if you have a copy and suddenly realized its a piece of crap, don't throw it out! It could be the item needed most for that quick-at-hand fire starter.
I have a 1976 914 2.0 and have found this book to be a valuable resource for someone unfamliar with quirks of the 914. AutoAtlanta just released a revised version in 2004, with updated tips and pictures. Every owner should have copy of this book, old or new.
