This is a great book for how to pick out a bit that is made well. I do like the way that she emphases that the bit is only a small picture in a horse and rider relationship. Buying a new bit will not solve all of your behavior issues, but it can change the direction of your conversation.However, her analysis for how bits work needs a lot of work itself. As a mechanical engineer and western horse trainer I had a very hard time getting through this section. She does not have an understanding of how the various leverage bits or gag bits work. Instead she offers up common misconceptions as fact. Unfortunately I see this section as the main part of the book. If you are looking for a book that will actually help you understand how bits work check out The Complete Book of Bits and Bitting by Elwyn Hartley Edwards. He has a very good understanding of the mechanics of how they work with great illustrations to go with it.
Writing a book on bits is a daunting task, given the many variations and types of bits in use today. The author does an admirable job of identifying and classifying different kinds of bits, in addition to describing how each type works and how it affects the horse and influences its behavior. Sprinkled throughout the book is interesting information on the history and manufacture of bits, as well as how to assess the quality and balance of a bit. The book is easy to read and has lots of color photographs; an excellent reference source.
This book informed me, a rider of nearly 15 years of some of the reasons why we use the bits we’ve used. However, because the subject is so vast, the book is relatively generalized. The author did a great job with an extremely broad topic.

With the ever increasing number of different bits available to the rider, it is refreshing to find an in-depth book with large photographed pictures and detailed explanation of each category of bit, whether it is a curb, a gag, a snaffle or myler and various others in between. This book goes onto explain the uses and actions of the various varieties of bit currently available in today's market. From the beginning to the end, using plain English, the author explains everything from how the bit sits in the mouth to what each category of bit is used for and how to know whether or not you have the right bit for your horse. This book was given to a friend and she thought it was a very very good book. It was informative and had the information she needed. She is a new horse owner and was receiving differing opinions about what kind of bit to use on her horse and the book helped answer this question.
This book does not explain conditions for using the different bits. I wanted further information regarding when to use which bit for which problem. I was disappointed.
This is one of the best books I've seen in a long time on horse bits. Good photos and descriptions of the types of bits, what they do and how they work.
