I really liked this book. I'd let this series laps with all the other reading and activities I've had. I've been trying to re-read some of these large series from the beginning and I've done so with all of the Drizzt books. I was pretty excited going in, because I'd previously read all the books before this one. Even though I'd forgotten most of what happened in the previous books, you still know the general gist of where it's going. I get to take characters I love and see all new adventures with them. I'm tearing through them. This books takes us on the quest to find Gauntlgrym. We've been hearing about this place since some of the first books. I'm glad that it makes an appearance in this book and I'm really happy to have finally seen it. I'm looking to see more of it in the future. I hope it's similar to Mithril Hall. We didn't know anything about it when they first set out for it, but they finally found it and made it operational again. I still don't think we've seen enough of Mithril Hall, but it's almost become common place at this point. You know the dwarves are working it, but we don't see anything special. I loved when they first found it and showed the hall of powerful weapons where Cattie-Brie found Taulmaril. I'd love to see more of that, even in Mithril Hall, and I'd love it to happen in Gauntlgrym as well.I can't talk too much about this book without spoiling it, but I like the different plots that are going on. The characters are solid and it has a pretty powerful conclusion. As far as negatives, I'm not sure I'm liking Drizzt as much in this book. He's changed. He doesn't have the same attitude or outlooks any more. He's really un-Drizzt. I don't know if this was intentional or not. It's not his first change of character. I like to read them in Chronological order, so I started with the ones where Drizzt is raised in the underdark. I think he had a much better and fleshed out character than when I first read of him in Icewind Dale. He was a little more battle happy in those books. His personality was really fleshed out and became the character I like best in the books about him growing up and becoming who he was.So it's not without precedent that he'd have a personality change. Also, living for as long as he is going to live and you probably wont' be stagnant. I believe it even says in this book or the next that humans go through major life shifts, even if the don't recognize it. Their outlook and the way they want to live their life changes. So I really hope that this is some kind of story arch that takes Drizzt from a darker place and sees him back to his former glory. If it's unintentional or a permanent change, then I'm not a fan. There is also some major time jumping going on. Especially in the beginning of this book. I'm not sure I like it, but I see the necessity for it. That levels out in the next one, which I just finished before writing this review.Overall, I really liked it. I like the story all the way through. I liked the characters, though I hope some changes aren't permanent and I think that everything that happens, even things I don't agree with, are reasonable given what I know about the characters and their world. I definitely recommend it for anyone who is a fantasy fan. It's required reading for Drizzt fans.

Some spoilersIt's been a really long time since I picked of a Drizzt book. I read the first one in the 90's and fell in love. I flew threw the books and loved the companions. But the reality for an elf is that they live a really long time. It's one thing to know in theory, but Salvatore does a great job showing how almost all of his friends that aren't either elf or dwarf have died of old age. It's had a real impact on the character and he's dealing with his own feelings of whether anything he's done has been for anything. He's questioning his values. And he's mostly just going on this Lord of the Rings style adventure as a means of going through the motions with one of his only remaining friends rather than because he truly believes in whatever the quest is. A lot of readers seemed to really dislike the concept of the book and the fact that the writer moves forward through decades of time in the first few chapters until virtually everyone Drizzt knows is dead, but I thought it was perfect especially since it's been so long since I've spent any time with the character. It was almost like getting a reintroduction with more added depth.

Gauntlgrym is the first book of the Neverwinter trilogy. This novel is billed as a continuation of the Legend of Drizzt Series, but, this book is more centered on Bruenor, the Dwarf King of Mithral Hall. This is not a bad plot device. Bruenor is covered with more depth and understanding than in past books. In other Forgotten Realms books Dwarves are brought out as irritating comic relief. This book showed believable character development of Bruenor Battlehammer. What I liked best of the novel is Bruenor's character development. Drizzt's behavior is also imbued with realism. I know there will be reviewers who will bring up the whininess of Drizzt and how he shoulda, woulda, coulda have completed that 6 step acceptance program 50 years ago. Readers forget that this character is at most a young adult in Drow Elf years and is not going to have human reactions. The other positive aspects of this book was the inclusion of Jarlaxle and Arthrogate. Jarlaxle is another Forgotten Realms favorite. He has this All the World's a Stage outlook. He seems to forgive everything if you are an interesting person. Here's hoping there will be more back story on him. Arthrogate provides the periodic comic relief of "Bwahaha!" Sometimes it is needed in this story. There are demonic cultists and Pompeiian blasts wreaking havoc and holocausts. So, good for Arthrogate to lighten things up a bit. There are the new characters; Dahlia and a Tifleing, Herzgo Alegni. They are both interesting and hope to see them in future books. Dahlia, without spoiling anything, will probably be in future Drizzt novels. Then there was Barrabus the Gray. I was thinking, "Is this You Know Who?".There are the trademark fight scenes that will gladden many Drizzt fans. On the other side of the coin there is character development and interaction. These should satisfy many who have liked other Drizzt books. In today's fantasy market there now has to be the obligatory vampire character and zombies. "Gauntlgrym" had this as well. This was neither a positive nor a negative to myself. If someone wants to read this book,Realms of the Dead: A Forgotten Realms Anthology (The Haunted Lands), a sort story omnibus is a good place to start. There is a short story by RAS that clears up some questions at the beginning of "Gauntlgrym".
